Dorelle’s Story

Dorelle

Dorelle, a retired nurse of 50 years, values connection across all walks of life. Now a Wayside volunteer, she believes everyone can make a difference, no matter their age or background.

Dorelle

My name is Dorelle, and I have been a volunteer at Wayside for over two years, starting soon after I came to live in the Eastern Suburbs.

Being a (very) senior citizen, I was looking for some way to contribute outside my daily routine that would be useful to others.

In my working life I was a nurse and thoroughly enjoyed the 50 years of experiences and interactions with people with such diverse backgrounds, from a High Court judge to the Saturday night larrikin, and everyone in between. I believe we will all need the help of others at some stage, regardless of how that looks.

Wayside visitors are not too dissimilar.  They may not be ill (although many are to varying degrees) but they still have a need for support, understanding, acceptance and encouragement.

I have not always lived in Sydney but had heard of the Wayside Chapel over the years via the radio and interviews with Ted Noffs, Graham Long and now Jon Owen. As Wayside Bondi Beach was relatively easy to get to, it was an easy decision for me to get involved, especially as I also get to see the beautiful ocean once a week!

When I made my Will, I didn’t hesitate to name Wayside Chapel. Even though it is not a large amount, I know that EVERY dollar helps and will be wisely and thoughtfully spent. I would recommend to anyone looking for a worthwhile cause to support this organisation.  There is a huge and ongoing need.

With the full realisation that “there but for the grace of God…”, I am very grateful that I can give.

Be it financially or physically, I hope others will realise that you are never too old to be of help, especially to those in challenging and distressing circumstances.

I'm here to help
