With restrictions now being relaxed and our world beginning the long journey back to the new normal, many of us are naturally feeling a sense of optimism and relief. But the reality is that, as we move deeper into winter, many vulnerable people will still be fighting for survival.
Lives are still at risk – from the threat of new COVID-19 outbreaks as well as the winter flu season. From the brutal reality of living homeless in the bitter winter cold. And from the devastating impact that loneliness and isolation is having on people’s mental health.
The prospect of people returning to living on our streets during the brutal winter months, having to face the elements with limited access to hygiene and shelter, already comprised immune systems and increased contact with others, means that our homeless community is entering their most vulnerable time.

Like any strong community, our success over the years has relied on the kindness and compassion of our supporters. Bequests have played a big part in making sure our community continues to flourish. Without these special acts of generosity, we simply couldn’t help as many people as we do by keeping our doors open every day of the year.
Making a lasting impact is easy – here’s how:
1. Speak with your loved ones
Talk to those closest to you about your decision to leave a gift in your Will to charity. Doing so means you trust the organisation and believe in the vital work they do. Wayside Chapel would be honoured to be held in such high regard.
2. Choose your legacy
Two ways you can leave a gift to Wayside Chapel in your Will are:
3. Use the correct wording
Here is some suggested wording to ensure your gift is used in accordance with your wishes.
‘I give to Wayside Chapel Foundation (ABN 77 406 918 553) free of all taxes and other deductions the residue of my estate / ____% share / $____ for its general purposes, and the receipt given on behalf of the Wayside Chapel shall be sufficient discharge to my Trustee.
4. Write and legalise your will
If you already have a Will in place, you will need to prepare a simple codicil to update your wishes. If you do not have a Will, you will need to include a specific bequest when your Will is prepared. A solicitor, lawyer or estate planner can assist you to do this under your direction. Your Will is not legal until it is signed and witnessed. You can change your Will and your beneficiaries at any time.
5. Please let us know
We understand that your Will is very personal. But by letting us know that you’ve made your bequest, we can send you our heartfelt thanks and recognise you as a committed supporter of Wayside. You don’t have to tell us the amount you intend to leave – simply let us know that you’re leaving a gift and we can make sure to keep you up to date about our vital work in the community. Workplace Giving is a program that enables you to donate small amounts to Wayside Chapel on a regular basis, through your employer’s payroll department. Each pay period you can nominate to donate a small amount to Wayside Chapel. Your employer will collect this and pass the donation on to Wayside. It makes a huge difference to what we do.
How do I get involved?
There are some simple steps to get involved in workplace giving:
1. Ask your employer if they have a workplace giving program
2. Register for workplace giving at your organisation
3. Nominate The Wayside Chapel as your preferred charity
4. Select the amount per pay period you would like to contribute
5. Stay in touch with us!
Many companies with a workplace giving program will also provide matched donations up to a maximum amount. This means that for every dollar you donate to Wayside Chapel your employer will also donate a dollar – doubling your contribution to what we do. We encourage you to check your employer’s policy on matched giving.
Donations through Workplace Giving are tax deductable and generally the deduction is made at the time of giving, as donations reduce your gross taxable income. Check out the Australian Taxation Office (www.ato.gov.au) for more information on the tax implications of contributing through Workplace Giving.
