It is with much sadness to hear of the passing of Sir Nicholas who, together with his wife Dame Marie Bashir, was a great supporter and friend of the Wayside Chapel.
Sir Nicholas was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1971, served as Lord Mayor of Sydney, and was appointed a Knight Bachelor in 1976. In 1990, he was made a Companion of the Order of Australia for his service to sport, media and to the community.
Sir Nicholas made an outstanding contribution to rugby union in Australia, as a player and captain. He played more than 100 matches for Australia, including tours of Great Britain, South Africa and New Zealand. He was president of the Australian Rugby Union from 1980 to 1987, and was instrumental to the establishment of the Rugby World Cup.
Sir Nicholas was the chairman of SBS from 1981 to 1999, as well as chairman of TAFE and the Migrant Employment and Qualification Board. He was chairman of the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust from 1990 to 2001.

If you want to continue your support of Wayside even after you’ve gone, you can leave a bequest to Wayside Chapel.
A bequest is a donation that you make via your will. Leaving a bequest to Wayside Chapel means that your love and support won’t leave us when you do. You can continue to help us do what we do; to stand with people at their worst moment and see them through to better days.
Your contribution will mean that marginalised members of our community have access to essential health, welfare, social and recreational services, as well as a place where they’re welcome just to ‘be’.
To leave a bequest, follow these steps:

Workplace Giving is a program that enables you to donate small amounts to Wayside Chapel on a regular basis, through your employer’s payroll department. Each pay period you can nominate to donate a small amount to Wayside Chapel. Your employer will collect this and pass the donation on to Wayside. It makes a huge difference to what we do.
How do I get involved?
There are some simple steps to get involved in workplace giving:
1. Ask your employer if they have a workplace giving program
2. Register for workplace giving at your organisation
3. Nominate The Wayside Chapel as your preferred charity
4. Select the amount per pay period you would like to contribute
5. Stay in touch with us!
Many companies with a workplace giving program will also provide matched donations up to a maximum amount. This means that for every dollar you donate to Wayside Chapel your employer will also donate a dollar – doubling your contribution to what we do. We encourage you to check your employer’s policy on matched giving.
Donations through Workplace Giving are tax deductable and generally the deduction is made at the time of giving, as donations reduce your gross taxable income. Check out the Australian Taxation Office (www.ato.gov.au) for more information on the tax implications of contributing through Workplace Giving.
